PJ and Ben, Lily and Emily

Last year while in four year old preschool, Ben sat at the dinner table with us one night and announced that he had kissed Lily.  We all looked at him in shock and I asked him when did this happen.  He told me that one day when he was at Lily’s house for a playdate they were playing house up in her room.  He was the dad and she was the mom so he kissed her.  The rest of the boys started laughing.  Ben just shrugged his shoulders and said, “So what.  I’m going to marry her you know.”  Well he sure told us.

He was really excited when Lily’s little sister was born.  That was all he talked about.  He couldn’t wait until his baby was born too.  While PJ was in Children’s Hospital, my mom brought Ben in to visit.  He sat and held PJ and told him that this summer mom could push him in the stroller and he could ride his bike and we would go over to his friend Lily’s house and that PJ would meet Llly’s baby sister, Emily.  Well, we never did go for that walk.  But we did spend lots of time with Lily’s family at the pool.

Ben and Lily have become quite the little couple.  They are great friends.  Some days they say they’re going to get married and then other days Ben tells me she broke up with him and they are just friends.  But whether or not the two of them ever date, they will always share a special bond.  They have been hand picked by God to be the big brother and big sister of little PJ and Emily.

I love the innocence of children.  They see beyond the superficial stuff.  Ben and Lily don’t see Down Syndrome.  Neither one even knows what that means.  They just look at their little baby brother and sister and love them.  Pure love.

One thing is for sure, PJ and Emily are so blessed to each have such a great big brother and big sister.

Having a child with special needs gives everyone an opportunity to know an even greater kind of love; thank you for sharing that with us…
